We enjoyed pond dipping in our school pond. It was interesting to see how many different creatures and plants live in the pond and we used classification charts to name them.
The Blue Cross visited year 2. We enjoyed meeting Helen and her dog Rosa. Rosa is a Spanish Water Dog. Helen told us about the important ways that the Blue Cross help animals. She also told us about how to be a responsible pet owner and the different ways to look after pets. Rosa also showed us some of the different tricks that she has learned.
We have visited the Green Wood to hunt for mini beasts. We looked under logs, rocks and in other places. We took photographs and identified the mini beasts that we found.
We had some really exciting visitors in our classroom. Zoo Lab held an animal workshop in our class. We learned about different animals and the animal groups they belong to. We also found out about the habitat the animals live in and how they have adapted to their habitat. We enjoyed holding, touching and learning about the animals.
As part of our topic we will be going on a mini beast hunt around our Green Wood. Before we do this we decided to give the mini beasts in the wood lots of comfortable places to call home. We constructed the mini beast hotel out of rolls of paper, pots of straw and pine cones and groups of sticks and pieces of card tied together with string. We hope when we do the hunt that we find lots of mini beasts.
As part of our theme we are investigating the different things that seeds need to grow into healthy plants. We planted our own bean seeds. We are going to keep a plant diary to record how the seeds grow over the next few weeks. We also planted seeds which we will keep in the dark and which we will not have water and we will compare the results. We will also see if seeds in the propagator grow better.
As part of our Great Outdoors topic we are starting to grow different vegetables in school. Parents and family members were invited into school to make a window sill propagator and mini plant pots to take home. We are made one for our classroom window sill.
We had some very special visitors in year 2! Mrs Wilson brought two Guide Dogs called Alma and Rhoda into school to meet the class. We learned about how the dogs are trained and the important work that they do. We were able to try some special glasses which allowed us to understand what it might be like if you have sight problems. We were then able to take the dogs for a walk around the room.
As part of our work on plants we have visited our Green Wood to investigate the different types of plants growing around our school. We took photographs of the different plants we found. We then recorded and labelled the different plants that we found.
