This half term we are going to be learning all about the Arctic and Antarctica. We will be learning about the animals that live there, the types of houses built there, the weather and lots more.
Below you will find our theme web for this half term which will tell you in more detail what we will be learning in the different areas of the new national curriculum.
In our new outdoor area we have an exciting animal Arctic tray set up with real icebergs!
We have two easels set up for us to paint Arctic scenes.
In our indoor provision area we have another Arctic scene tray. As we work through the unit the children will be given the opportunities to make up their own stories using the wooden people and animals.
In our water tray we have different coloured glitter and to add sparkles to our water play.
On Tuesday 4th November we met a new member of our class.
Meet Stanley.
Stanley is a brown bear cub. He has come from Alaska which is in North America. He is preparing for a very special time of year for him at the moment. During November he prepares to hibernate. Hibernation is where some animals go to sleep during the cold months of Winter and wake up in Spring.
We have been learning the Titanic. We found out that it was a brand new boat and it was sailing from Southampton in England to New York in America. Unfortunately on the way it hit an iceberg which made a huge hole in the side of the boat. People began to panic and raced to the lifeboats. Lots of people died because there were not enough life boats for them all to get into.
We used plasticine to make our own small replicas of the Titanic. Then we used the ipods to take photos of them moving closer and closer to the plasticine iceberg.

We have also found out about Captain Scott who was an British explorer who wanted to be the first person to reach the South Pole. He went on two expeditions to the Antarctic.
On second expedition he made it to the South Pole but he wasn't the first to reach it. He was beaten by a Norwegian explorer called Captain Amundsen. Captain Scott and his team began the long journey home but they hadn't gone very well prepared and ended up dying of hypothermia and starvation.
