Summer 2 2017
June - July

This half term we will be preparing for the transition to high school. We have lots of exciting things planned including our Year 6 Leavers' Production called 'School Daze' and our Year 6 Leavers' prom. This half we will also be working on an Enterprise project using food from Fuel For School which we will cook with and then sell to our families. We will also be working in the Green Wood on a weekly basis and will be posting photographs of the different activities we complete on the website. Please look at for further details on the pages below.

Year 6 Prom

On Friday 21st July we held our Year 6 prom. It was lovely evening which allowed us to celebrate with our classmates.

Halifax Ski Centre

On Friday 14th July we had our Year 6 class trip to the Halifax Ski Centre. We took part in two sessions: skiing and snow tubing. Even the teachers had a go at snow tubing! We all really enjoyed the day.

On Monday 19th June we had our Year 6 class photograph taken. These will be available to order through school shortly. However here is one of our own!

Summer events (May 2017)

Here are some photographs of some of the different activities that we have enjoyed this month.

Team building day (12th May 2017)

To celebrate the end of SATs we enjoyed taking part in a special team building day. We planned, prepared and cooked different food for a picnic in our school grounds. We worked in teams to make pizzas, pasta, flapjacks, brownies and ice cream.

Picnic preparations

After preparing for our picnic we worked in teams to make tents outside. We only had canes, masking tape and paper to complete our challenge. We worked really well together and were very pleased with our finished constructions. We then ate our picnic in our tents.

Easter SATs Revision: Maths.

  • You have all been given two tasks in your homework books relating to fractions, percentages and decimals. As well as knowing how to convert these, there are also lots of questions here linked to division and multiplication and completing these tasks in full is a non-negotiable, bare minimum expectation.
  • Look through the errors and the feedback in your spring 2 assessments. You have an arithmetic, reasoning 1 and reasoning 2 paper and we have identified specific areas for individual pupils to work on. It is important that you do not simply 'put them away' and forget about them, these mistakes will help you to learn.
  • Revisit your Learn By Heart concepts. These are vital maths skills and skills for life. Look back through the help sheets and the tests you have completed - it is likely these skills may be a little rusty and reading them again will certainly help.
  • On this page, there are over a dozen past SAT maths papers for you to complete. I suggest you choose two or three full papers per week to work through at your own pace. 6-8 questions a day is all it takes so you may like to do 3-4 in the morning and 3-4 in the evening to break this up. You will be surprised how much you cover if you do a little, but often.
  • Practice your multiplication tables and their inverses - however sharp you feel these skills are.
  • You have been given a maths glossary across three pages and you have one copy for school and one for home. This document is your new best friend - read a little bit each day and work with a friend or an adult to 'test' each other. In just three short pages you will learn more or less everything important in Year 6 maths.

BBC Bitesize is a great resource for maths revision and features videos and mini-games to suit all concepts:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/maths/

How you work is up to you but don't over-do it and don't just do nothing for two weeks!

Easter SATs Revision: SPAG.

  • Choose at least two of the 'Short answer questions' papers to look through from the resource bank on this page. This will provide you with around 100 exam questions. You will find some of them easier and some of them harder and this is normal, don't worry. The more experience you have of dealing with these questions, the more relaxed you will feel for the real thing.
  • Choose a few Powerpoint presentations to work through. There are over 40 to choose from on this page and they will target the concepts you are struggling with. There are answers as well to help you check if you are on the right track.
  • Focus on the errors in your spring 2 SPAG exam. We have identified these for you and you know the specific areas you need to work on. Spending time working through your errors will be a great help in improving your skills.
  • Read you pink SPAG revision log. You now have 4 different sessions with a total of around 20-25 concepts to work on. We have made great progress this week in tackling the errors from assessment week but reading and absorbing this in your own time in a quiet setting or with a friend or adult will be of great help to you.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/english/spelling_grammar/ - follow this link (or copy and paste it) for some excellent, light-hearted SPAG games and activities on a site with a great reputation for high quality resources.

Easter Holiday SATs revision tasks 2017:

Reading

  • Read and discuss a variety of texts from the resources below. If you are looking to work on different skills around the same text then 'Arctic Monster' is a good fiction text to work with, as is 'Randall's Afternoon Snack'.
  • 'Too Little Too Late', the newspaper article about the homeless man will address several skills, including multiple choice answers and deeper skills of inference. I would suggest you write the answers to the deeper questions on paper.
  • The entire Anne Frank diary task is also available on this page so read the passages and consider the questions in this work. Don't feel you need to 'stop' at the point we have reached in class - if you are enjoying it then read on and answer the questions with a friend or on your own.
  • As a minimum expectation, try at least two of the inference tasks and two of the non-fiction tasks. Write your answers down in full sentences to try to replicate the expectations of the SAT tests but in a relaxed setting.
