We have been investigating the different building materials used at the time of The Great Fire of London. We have learned that Tudor homes were constructed from wattle and daub. We built our own wattle and daub walls in the Green Wood. We learned that the wood was woven between wooden walls and then the daub was smoothed over the top and then allowed to dry.
We tested different materials in the Green Wood to see how flammable they are. We tested materials in the fire pit to see how quickly they burn. We timed the materials to see which burned the quickest. We also made a model of Tudor style houses to reconstruct the fire and to demonstrate how fire quickly spreads.
As part of our Creative Curriculum work we have been investigating the different properties of materials. We learned that waterproof materials do not absorb water. We tested different materials to see whether they were waterproof.
Fire Safety talk (14th November 2014)
We were very pleased to have a special visit from Mr Robson. He gave us lots of information about fire safety and told us about the different work that firemen and women do. We also looked at the different equipment and special protective clothing that fire fighters use today. This will be very useful when we learn about the Fire of London and the equipment that they had in 1666.
Children in Need 2014 (14th November 2014)
We enjoyed dressing up as super heroes to raise money for Children in Need. Mrs Smith and Mrs Mitchell dressed up as Batman and Robin. Here we are in our fantastic costumes. Our school raised £190 for Children in Need.
Remembrance day 2014 (11th November 2014)
We walked to St Mary's Church with Years 1 and 3 on Remembrance Day. We made a special poppy wreath and all wrote our own special messages of Remembrance. At the church we visited the war memorial and held a minutes silence.
Remembrance Day Poems (8th November 2014)
We entered lots of poems into the Telegraph and Argus Poems for Poppy Day Competition. Lots of our poems were printed in the special WW1 supplement in the newspaper. Here are a selection of our poems.
