This half term we are going to be learning all about dinosaurs. We will learn about when they roamed the earth, the different types of dinosaurs, whether they were carnivores, herbivores or omnivores, where their bones have been found and lots more.
In our provision areas we will have an archaeological dig, a dinosaur swamp, volcano building, a dinosaur small world tray and these will change weekly.
Dinosaur Discovery Theme Web
Dinosaurs have been found all over the world on different continents. We will be learning about the 7 continents and 5 oceans of the world. Here is a map of the world showing the 7 continents.

Numeracy
Below are two videos we have been using to help us learn our number bonds to 10.
On Monday the 5th January Mr Arundale received a letter from a dinosaur detective explaining that a special dinosaur had escaped from their secret forest and they believed it was heading to Wyke. The children then looked for clues to where the dinosaur might be. We looked in the Green Wood as we knew they liked trees.
When we got there we found huge footprints on the floor.
What did we find?
We also found two golden eggs! When we took a closer look we found that one had already hatched!!!
We took the eggs back into school. When we came into school on Tuesday there was no change. The last egg still hadn't hatched. Joshua thought it might be that the eggs were too cold. So Syke said "why don't we put a blanket on them?" The children covered the eggs with cloths and blankets.
On Thursday when we arrive in school we saw that the dinosaur eggs looked different! They had hatched!!!
Mrs Smith videoed our reactions.
We found the dinosaurs!

On Monday 12th January we found 9 dinosaur eggs in one of our provision trays. The were made out of ice. We could see tiny dinosaurs inside them. Mr Arundale asked us to work out how we could help them hatch. So we had to find out what would make the ice melt the quickest.
Investigating
We had to work out what would make the ice melt the quickest. We had sugar, salt, vinegar and warm water.
We found that the salt and the warm water worked the best and melted the ice the quickest.
In Literacy we have been writing our own poems. We used rhyming words and rhyming couplets. Here are some of our poems.
On Friday 16th January we went on a bear hunt! We had been reading the story 'We're going on a bear hunt' and decided to see if we could find a bear ourselves. We got all dressed up in waterproof clothes and set off. We said the story as we went.
We're going on a bear hunt.
We're going to catch a big one.
What a beautiful day!
We're not scared.
Uh oh! Grass.
Long, wavy grass.
We can't go over it.
We can't go under it.
Oh no! We've got to go through it.

It was a bear!!!
We quickly made our way back home and into bed.
Quick! Back through ...
We have been writing our own story similar to 'We're going on a bear hunt' but inside of a bear hunt we were going on a dinosaur hunt.
We each draw 6 pictures to show our story. We added three obstacles for the family to try and get through and a jungle where the dinosaur was hiding.
One group were videoed acting and saying their story.
On Monday 26th January we started learning about instructions. We looked at important features of instructions.
We watched a video on washing hands. Then we had to try and write our own instructions on how to wash your hands.
One group had to act out and say the instructions.
How to wash your hands. First ...

On Wednesday 7th January we went to the Green Wood to make some dinosaur collages out out of natural materials.

In our computing lessons we are learning about algorithms. On Thursday 8th January we went outside into the playground and followed instructions written by Mr Arundale. Then we got into pairs and instructed out partners to move around the playground. We had to move forwards, backwards, left and right.
